Draft preprint - June 2026

What TTS Throws Away

A taxonomy and exploratory evaluation of paralinguistic script controls in modern text-to-speech systems.

Format arXiv-style LaTeX
Length 17 pages
Status Draft preprint
Scope Exploratory study

Claim Boundary

Modern TTS engines already start from a high expressive baseline. In this exploratory setup, paralinguistic script markup behaves as a residual control layer rather than the dominant source of naturalness.

What It Contributes

The draft introduces a ten-axis taxonomy, a five content-register matrix, a script-stripping ablation, a model-judge comparison, a prior-work gap map, and an appendix with the operational prompts used in the study.
